The Invert
The Invert is a project over three years in the making, loosely based on historic Salt Lake actress Maude Adams. The video clip below (with captions) is an excerpt from the final scene of my first staged reading, courtesy of Southern Utah University's Black Box Grant Program.
The Invert tells the story of May Langsdale, who plays the title character in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm which has just transferred to Broadway. Upon meeting her new wardrobe assistant, Lelia Solomons, May is instantly smitten. As they grow closer and May grapples with the trauma from her strict upbringing, the leading man of Sunnybrook, Jude Vacanza, becomes increasingly aggressive in his attempts to seduce May. In order to force her hand, Jude blackmails the director, Christopher into setting up a fake publicity stunt relationship for Jude and May. Three flashbacks are interspersed throughout the main action of the show to give glimpses into May’s old life in the mountains of New Hampshire where she was caught in the family barn kissing her childhood friend Joanna. In the end, May is unable to hide her love for Lelia any longer and kisses her. Jude, in a drunken stupor, discovers them. He tries to shoot them both in a jealous rage, but May pushes him out the window. The theatre company covers up his death to avoid scandal. The play ends in May confessing to Lelia that she is a “sexual invert,” and of course Lelia confesses her mutual love.
My duties besides writing/directing included sourcing props, editing/controlling sound cues, creating a basic lighting plot/operating the light board, designing/printing posters, reading stage directions, designing/printing programs, and printing/binding scripts. The cast included Jenna McLellan as May, Whitney Black as Lelia, Parker Meredith as Jude, Spencer Smith as Christopher, Nora Asplund as Joanna, Mark Warmuskerken as Brendan, and Kendra Pugmire as Athaliah.
